[Here is the Thing], the debut EP from electronica singer-songwriter KANG New, has been released. After releasing their first single, "Bad Clouds," in March 2023, and their second single, "I Have More," in June, KANG New has entertained audiences with their repetitive melodies, danceable beats, and simple lyrics.
On this album, they produced every track themself. Let's dig deep into this ambitious first EP.
The first track to open the album, "Grief," is similar to the image they've presented in their performances but with a new vibe. A simple yet strangely interesting lead synthesizer accompanies the repetitive drum machine. The following vocals are not their previous singles' calm, low voice but a thin, mumbling sound. The lyrics are not light, featuring heavy words like "death" and "fatigue." This track was written to mourn domesticated animals that did not survive the summer floods.
The album's second track, "The Sun From Mars (feat. Fat Hamster)," continues the perspective of the first track and criticizes the climate crisis and irresponsible human attitudes. The song features electronica musician Fat Hamster, and it is one of the most intense and aggressive tracks on the album. The combination of sharp, edgy synths over a downtempo beat and heavy bassline showcases Fat Hamster's signature style. The vocal shouting in the background adds to the song's impulsive vibe, making it sure to be another favorite in their live shows.
Moving on to the third track, it takes a funky turn that might be unexpected. "Kill This Sound" has a reminiscent '80s pop feel with retro drums, guitars, keyboards, and moody bass. Adding a playful narration in the middle of the song further enhances its funky energy.
The fourth track, "Nana," is a more unexpected ballad with a twist. An emotional synth sound slowly builds over the choppy drum machine. The simple vocals, laid low in the bass, convey the lyrics' feelings of loss and remembrance more sorrowfully.
The final track is "Mohano," an experimental and fun track that's reminiscent of contemporary music. The thin, mumbling vocals of the first track are complemented by lyrics sung in a Gyeongsang-do dialect. This is accompanied by pounding east asian drums and strings, and an 8-bit synth loop, creating a somewhat strange atmosphere.
With tracks that are playful, sometimes geeky, and distinct, [Here is the Thing] allows us to explore KANG New's head full of colorful and crazy ideas, with a variety of vocals that switch between singing, shouting, and narrating.

앨범을 시작하는 첫 번째 트랙인 '애도 (Grief)'는 이제껏 그가 공연에서 보여주었던 이미지와 닮은 듯하면서도 새로운 분위기를 선사한다. 반복적인 드럼머신의 연주 위에 간결하면서도 묘한 재미를 주는 리드 신디사이저가 수놓인다. 이어서 나오는 보컬은 그 간의 싱글에서 들려주었던 차분하고 낮은 목소리가 아니라 앳되고 중얼거리는 듯하다. 가사 또한 '죽음' '피로' 등 가볍지 않은 단어들과 힘겨운 묘사로 이루어져 있다. 이는 여름의 수해에서 살아남지 못한 가축동물들의 처지를 애도하기 위해 쓰여진 것이라 한다.
앨범의 타이틀곡인 두 번째 트랙 'The Sun From Mars (feat. Fat Hamster)' 역시 첫 트랙의 관점을 이어받아 기후위기와 이를 둘러싼 무책임한 인간들의 태도를 비판한다. 일렉트로니카 뮤지션 팻햄스터가 피쳐링으로 참가한 이 곡은 앨범에서 가장 강렬하며 공격적인 사운드로 이루어졌다. 팻햄스터의 시그니처라고 할 수 있는 다운템포 비트와 헤비한 베이스라인을 기반으로 예리하게 날 선 신디사이저 사운드가 돋보이는 트랙이다. 이에 두 번째 싱글 [I Have More]에서 보여주었던 보컬 샤우팅이 백그라운드에 깔리며 곡의 분위기를 더욱 충동질한다. 공연장에서 또 다른 인기 넘버가 될 것임에 틀림없다.
세 번째는 조금 의외라는 생각이 드는 펑키한 트랙이 등장한다. 'Kill This Sound'는 레트로한 드럼과 기타, 키보드 사운드와 무디한 베이스가 80년대 팝 사운드를 연상케 한다. 심지어 곡의 중간에 익살스러운 나레이션을 가미하여 펑키한 에너지를 더한다.
이어서 더욱 의외의 발라드로 반전에 반전을 주는 네 번째 트랙이 바로 'Nana'이다. 잘게 박자를 쪼개는 드럼머신에 감성적인 신스 사운드가 차분하게 코드를 진행해간다. 중저음으로 낮게 깔리는 담담한 보컬은 가사에 담긴 상실과 추모의 감정을 더욱 애절하게 전달한다.
마지막은 마치 컨템포러리 뮤직을 연상시키는 난해하면서도 재미난 트랙인 '뭐하노 (Mohano)'이다. 첫 번째 트랙에서 보여주었던 앳되고 중얼거리는 보컬이 경상도 방언의 가사를 부르며 수미상관을 이룬다. 이에 더해 동양의 북과 현악기 사운드가 질주하고 꾸밈없는 8비트풍 신디사이저가 반복되며 다소 괴이한 분위기를 자아낸다.

익살스럽고 때로는 괴짜 같기도 해 입체적인 재미가 뚜렷한 트랙들에 싱잉과 샤우팅, 나레이션을 넘나드는 다양한 보컬이 어우러진 [Here is the Thing]을 통해 우리는 다채롭고 황당한 생각이 가득 찬 캉뉴의 머릿속을 탐험할 수 있다.
